The BNSF is currently shipping Montana coal to Roberts Bank, BC, destined for Chile. The company is also running a regular intermodal train from Chicago to Fraser Surrey Docks at Brownsville, BC. They also recently ran about 20 potash trains—delivered by the CPR from mines in Saskatchewan—south from Sapperton to Portland, Oregon (new shipments have started up again).

The speculation about CN taking over the BCR ended up to be true. I have a great deal of ambivalence towards the whole thing, both from an employee standpoint and as a British Columbian. CN truly is the best candidate since it has direct connections (interchanges) with the BCR at Prince George and North Vancouver, and integration of both lines makes logistical sense. Only the BCR yard in Prince George is part of the deal—CN is not interested in those at Squamish or North Vancouver—so Thornton Yard will be a much busier place in the future.
