The Films of Sam Newfield

The Terror of Tiny Town

Sam Newfield holds the distinction of being the most prolific feature film director of the American sound era. Because of his amazing output, all existing Newfield filmographies are in some way incomplete. The following is the culmination of many different film references -- an attempt to accurately catalogue all of his features and most of his one- and two-reelers.

There are a few shortcomings in the filmography: the chronological order of films is not accurate although some semblance has been attempted, and a few entries have incomplete information, notably the early features.

By mid-1947 PRC was completely absorbed by Eagle-Lion Films, a process which had started a year earlier. It was around this time that Eagle-Lion reissued a number of Newfield's previous PRC product as 40-minute featurettes: Code of the Plains (culled from The Renegades), Frontier Fighters (culled from Western Cyclone), The Panhandle Trail (culled from The Mysterious Rider), Raiders of Red Rock (source film unknown).

Lippert Pictures was an independent distributor whose origins go back to the post-war Screen Guild company. With longtime cinematographer Jack Greenhalgh, productions for Lippert were made under the names Neufeld Pictures, Mayflower Productions, Spartan Productions, and Tom Productions. Spartan also made a few films for producers Ron Ormond and William Berke, and even Hal Roach's independent R&L production of "As You Were" for Lippert was known under the Spartan banner (as was at least one other feature). Spartan appears to have been somewhat of a unit within Lippert, the company name changes being more for tax reasons than anything else. Not operating a studio per se (space was leased), Lippert Pictures operated until 1955 when Robert L. Lippert ceased distribution -- and helming the odd production himself -- and moved to oversee Regal Films, an autonomous budget unit at 20th Century-Fox.

Two of the many co-productions Lippert Pictures handled between 1952 and 1955 as part of an agreement with the British distributor Exclusive Films (with Anthony Hinds producing at Hammer). Newfield's name evidently does not appear on the UK release of The Gambler and the Lady (credited to Pat Jenkins).
1953 Now working in television, Sam directs no films this year. Sigmund (without cinematographer Greenhalgh, who would now retire from features) goes on to produce Lippert's Ansco-colored "Sins of Jezebel" starring Paulette Goddard.
1954 Thunder Over Sangoland  73 Lippert Rudolph C. Flothow Arrow Jon Hall
One of three features Lippert released that were culled from the syndicated television series "Ramar of the Jungle". Newfield's other television work around this time includes the syndicated series "Captain Gallant of the Foreign Legion", produced between 1954 and 1955, starring Buster Crabbe and Fuzzy Knight. The series, filmed on location in Morocco, aired on NBC between 1955 and 1957 under the title "Foreign Legionnaire".

Associated Film Releasing Corp. was a one-season distributor who besides these films also handled a couple of other independent westerns: Ron Ormond's "Naked Gun" and Richard Bartlett's "Two-Gun Lady". AFRC also released one British co-production, "Blonde Bait", made by Anthony Hinds at Hammer. The company seems to have been created to fill the void left over when Lippert ceased distribution.

September/October 1957: Newfield ends his career directing these two films back-to-back for the Canadian counterpart of Regal Films (helmed by Robert L. Lippert). Previous to this, in 1956, Newfield had been in Canada directing episodes of the syndicated television series "Hawkeye and the Last of the Mohicans" starring John Hart and Lon Chaney, Jr. It was from this short-lived series, originally aired between 1957 and 1958, that features were compiled and released to television: Along the Mohawk Trail, The Long Rifle and the Tomahawk (co-dir: Sidney Salkow), The Pathfinder and the Mohican, The Redman and the Renegades. The series was produced by Normandie Productions, the Canadian subsidiary of Television Programs of America, the U.S. company that also released "Captain Gallant of the Foreign Legion".
