A few years after the New Westminster Southern Railway was abandoned part of the right-of-way was used to form Harvie Road, named in honor of railroad engineer Robert Harvie. From the junction at the Pacific Highway, the road makes its way to the industrial area of Port Kells, near Canadian National's main line. Severed when the TransCanada Highway was built in the 1960's, Harvie Road's origins are readily apparent with its contours and easy grades. The following is a photo gallery of what the road looks like today, devoid of the old-growth timber that would have lined much of the original route. Across the TransCanada Highway, where most of the road is not paved, parts of the right-of-way appear as if under construction, awaiting ties and rails. |
