Construction of the Grandview Cut through the east side of Vancouver in 1913. The cut, over a mile long, would ease the Great Northern's grade (built in 1904) into the city and provide the means to fill the eastern marshy edges of False Creek for terminal land -- to be shared by the Great Northern and Canadian Northern (Canadian Pacific had claimed the choicest land in the 1880's).
