Other BNSF Lines in British Columbia

The Grand Forks area, part of the BNSF Kettle Falls Subdivision, has 14 miles of Canadian track originally built in 1902 as part of the VV&E, the only section remaining outside of the Fraser Valley. In 1941, ten years after the line from Curlew to Oroville was cut off and then abandoned, GN completed a major realignment of its trackage with Kettle Falls replacing Marcus as the junction to Grand Forks. The line now terminates in San Poil after service further south to Republic was abandoned in 1983. In 1991 CP abandoned its last line into Grand Forks, from Castlegar, leaving the area to rely solely on the BN for a route out. Today the Grand Forks Railway, handling mostly lumber products, operates 3.5 miles of ex-CP trackage in Grand Forks and connects with the BNSF.

The BNSF Nelson Subdivision has four miles of Canadian track to Columbia Gardens, where the shortline International Rail Road Systems (IRRS) handles traffic up to Parks after purchasing that section from the BNSF in 1998. Traffic beyond Parks was discontinued shortly afterwards, although before it was not uncommon to see a BN locomotive as far up the line as Salmo where the rest of the old Nelson & Fort Sheppard Railway was somewhat overgrown but still intact except for level crossings. This was the first connected railway into the Kootenays, built by the Spokane Falls & Northern Railway who had reached Colville in 1889, Nelson in 1893 and Rossland (on a branch from Northport) in 1896. In two years GN would control the lines.

The Oroville-Wenatchee line, built by the GN in 1914, was sold by the BNSF in 1996 and now operates as the Cascade and Columbia River Railroad (CSCD).
