On June 19, 1909, the Vancouver-bound Seattle Flyer passed over a mis-aligned switch at the north end of the New Westminster Bridge, causing the engine and tender to plummet into the Fraser River -- drowning the engineer and fireman. The train, with a combined baggage and mail car, two day coaches, and a parlour car, intended to take the track on the left, a short distance from the Great Northern station at New Westminster. The bridge here was later modified with heavy girders to prevent a similar accident. |
